Exploring Ancient Pottery Craftsmanship: Wuhan University’s Yangtze River Civilization Archaeology Institute Revisits Luoshan Pottery Base

On June 24, Professor Li Tao, deputy director of the Yangtze River Civilization Archaeology Institute at Wuhan University, led his research team to Luoshan County, Xinyang City, for a 14-day investigation into the traditional pottery craftsmanship of Luoshan. The Luoshan County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism, in collaboration with the Zhoudang Township government, attached great importance to this endeavor, gathering preliminary information on 30 kiln sites across 15 villages. Based on the distribution of these kiln sites, the team developed a scientifically planned investigation route.

Professor Li Tao’s team first visited the pottery workshops in Huangtugang, Guidian Village, where they observed and documented local pottery tools, techniques, and products. The team marveled at the remarkable skills of Luoshan pottery inheritor Chen Zhiru, reflecting on how, despite the passage of time, Luoshan pottery has steadfastly preserved the roots and lineage of Central Plains pottery-making traditions. They expressed confidence that this ancient craft would continue to flourish in the face of modern challenges.

This investigation follows the team’s earlier publication in Asian Archaeological Research on the analysis of soil samples from Luoshan pottery and represents another significant practical undertaking. It holds both historical and contemporary significance. The Luoshan County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism will continue collaborating with Wuhan University’s Yangtze River Civilization Archaeology Institute to investigate kiln sites such as Fuchong Kiln, Xu Kiln, and Qianzhou Kiln in Zhoudang Township, along with their pottery-making techniques. Together, they aim to further uncover the archaeological and cultural heritage value of Luoshan pottery, revitalizing and utilizing these resources to bring new vibrancy to this ancient craft.
